Legal and Justice Policy

Barroso und Frattini

The European Union and the European Communities have a broad spectrum of competence which affects virtually all areas of life. Of special significance is the competence that has led to the establishment of an internal market. The following policy areas are among the most significant in the Federal Ministry of Justice’s scope of competence:

  • Judicial cooperation in civil matters
  • Judicial cooperation in criminal matters
  • Activities associated with trade and economic policy within the scope of competence of the FMJ

Furthermore, within the scope of its co-supervisory competence, the Federal Ministry of Justice also participates in the formation of political will on the domestic level with regard to many other endeavours by the European Union and the European Communities.

Judical Cooperation in Civil Matters

The European Internal Market is leading to increasing mobility of people in the European Union, and to an expansion of cross-border contacts.

Judical Cooperation in Criminal Matters

When it comes to cooperation in criminal matters, the European Union has set itself the goal of a balanced development of Union-wide measures to fight crime, whilst at the same time protecting freedom and the legally-guaranteed rights of individuals, as well as of economic stakeholders.

Trade and Economic Policy Activities within the FMJ`s Remit

The implementation of the European Internal Market comprises the creation of a secure legal framework for economic transactions.

Co-reviewing Competences

Over and above this, in the framework of its co-examination remit, the Federal Ministry of Justice is also working on domestic policy development with regard to many other projects of the European Union and of the European Communities.
