Topic Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection
Dr Stefanie Hubig, born on 15 December 1968 in Frankfurt am Main, completed her secondary education in 1988 in Munich with the general qualification for higher education. From 1989 to 1993 she studied law at the University of Regensburg, completing her legal training in 1995 with the Second State Examination.
Following her legal preparatory service, from 1996 Stefanie Hubig served as a judge in criminal and civil matters at Ingolstadt Regional Court, and from 1998 as public prosecutor at Ingolstadt Public Prosecution Service.
In 2000 she joined the Federal Ministry of Justice, where she worked as a desk officer for landlord and tenant law, and as deputy head of the office of Federal Justice Ministers Herta Däubler-Gmelin and Brigitte Zypries. From 2005 to 2008 she was head of the division for cabinet and parliamentary affairs in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
In 2008 she took up a position at the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate as desk officer for the coordination of judicial affairs and for constitutional law. From 2009 to 2014 she was head of the Directorate-General for Criminal Law in the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection.
Following the 2013 Bundestag election she was appointed civil servant State Secretary and head of administration at the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection. Under Federal Justice Minister Heiko Maas, she was responsible for the justice system, legal policy and administration.
In the wake of the Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag election, Minister-President Malu Dreyer appointed her Minister for Education in Rhineland-Palatinate on 18 May 2016. She was re-appointed to this post on 18 May 2021. In 2020, Stefanie Hubig served as president of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs; from January 2024 she coordinated the Education Ministries of the Länder with an SPD government within the Standing Conference.
As of 6 May 2025, she holds the office of Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection.
